Double envelopes consist of an inner envelope and an outer envelope. The inner envelope contains the invitation (and other enclosure cards such as rsvp card). The inner envelope is then inserted into a slightly larger outer envelope.
This formality is a tradition begun to ensure that the contents inside remain clean and in pristine condition when put through rigorous handling during the delivery process. With the advancement of technology, the cleanliness of the postal service has vastly improved over the years - which means a single envelope will most likely protect the contents just fine.
Letterpress invitations include return addressing.

To keep your beautiful invitations in pristine condition, we offer double envelopes to mail your wedding invitations. This includes and inner, ungummed envelope and and outer, gummed envelope. These are recommended if you use an envelope liner to keep the liner intact.
